I’m a sucker for a good Shamrock Shake, I just hate that McDonald’s only sells them around St. Patricks Day! I love it all year round, so we created a recipe where we can do that.

- With minimal ingredients and a few minutes, it is a breeze to throw together.
- This is super kid-friendly, so be prepared for them to ask for it all the time.
- Most of the ingredients you can find at home.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Heavy whipping cream
Powdered sugar
Vanilla ice cream
Whole milk
Peppermint or mint extract
Green food coloring
Maraschino cherries for garnish, optional
Sprinkles for garnish, optional
HOW TO MAKE A SHAMROCK SHAKE RECIPE, STEP BY STEP:
- In a medium-sized bowl, with a hand mixer or a whisk, beat the heavy cream with the powdered sugar until you get stiff peaks. Set aside.
- In a blender, add the ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, green food coloring, and half of the whipped cream.
- Blend until smooth. Taste, add more food coloring and extract as you feel necessary for color and flavor.
- Blend again to combine if you added anything.
- Pour the milkshake mixture into glasses.
- Top with the remaining whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and sprinkles if using and serve immediately.
WHAT TYPE OF VANILLA ICE CREAM IS BEST TO USE?
You can use any of your favorite vanilla ice creams for this, we just use plain jane vanilla. But vanilla bean and New York will work fine. As well as any brand of ice cream as well.
WHAT DOES THE WHIPPED TOPPING DO IN THE SHAMROCK SHAKE?
This really adds a depth of flavor and creaminess that we cannot live without, it is something we do with a lot of our shakes and really makes them over the top.
Do not skip this step because it is integral to the texture and flavor of this recipe.
CAN I USE COOL WHIP?
If you do not want to make your own homemade whipped cream you can use store-bought, there shouldn’t be an issue, the flavor may taste a little different but it will work nonetheless.
WHAT EXTRACT IS BETTER – MINT OR PEPPERMINT?
They are very similar in flavor, so that is why I say that you can use either or. We have tried it with both the extracts and like both flavors in there, so try one and see if you like it over the other.
HOW TO STORE:
This is best when it is first made as it is ice cream and melts, but if you want to make some extra you can put it in a freezer bag where it should keep for around a week.
When you are ready to have another Shamrock Shake Recipe then just remove to the refrigerator until it is pourable.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Add more or less extract to your liking.
- Gel or liquid food coloring can be used.
- Use as much food coloring as you’d like to reach your desired color.
- Double this recipe to serve more people.
- Any vanilla ice cream will work for this.
- You can use store-bought whipped cream if you do not want to make your own.
